A Few Words About The Owner

Marcy Mahowald is the owner and repair technician at Flute Alchemy. An artisan flute repair business. Her journey into repair began unconventionally, with her first job detailing airplanes at her father's shop, sparking her interest in hands-on work and attention to detail. However, her first love was music, and when she discovered she could combine the two, she was hooked. This led her to pursue a degree in Music Performance at Stetson University, followed by a degree in Band Instrument Repair at Minnesota State College Southeast.

In 2018, Marcy joined JL Smith/Flute World, where she advanced from apprentice to Director of the Instrument Service Department over six years. During her tenure, she studied with masters, earned Muramatsu and Straubinger certifications and took engraving lessons from master engraver Brian Powley.

As Director, Marcy developed a comprehensive six-month curriculum for flute repair apprentices, focusing on building foundational skills and fostering a deeper understanding of the craft. She recently left her position to establish her own specialty flute repair shop, Flute Alchemy, where she brings her passion and precision to every instrument she services.

In 2024, Marcy co-founded the Women's Musical Instrument Repair Collective, promoting inclusivity and professional development in the industry.

Beyond her professional achievements, Marcy remains deeply committed to mentorship and education, sharing her knowledge and experience with burgeoning technicians. When not working, she loves to travel, explore new places, get lost in the world of a good book, and spend time with her husband and their furbabies, Luna and Kingsley.
